Building Permit Fee Calculations

Building Permit Fee Table

Building permit fees are assigned based upon the value (per square foot) of the structure regulated by the permit. In addition to the base permit fee there is usually a plan review fee equal to 65% of the permit fee. Simple projects not requiring plans (such as re-roofing, window replacement, etc.) will not be charged a plan review fee.

There may be additional "impact" or "mitigation" fees that are collected at time of building permit issuance (usually new homes or commercial buildings) however, these fees are not actually part of the building permit and therefore are not part of the following calculations.

To calculate your Building Permit fees please follow the listed instructions:

  1. Derive the "per square foot" value for the use and type of construction for your project by using the Building Valuation Data Table. (Use the values shown as "good")
  2. Multiply the "per square foot" value by the actual footage of your project.
  3. Use Table 1-A to determine the actual permit fee based on the project valuation in item #2 (above).
  4. If plans are required for your project, multiply the value from item #3 (above) by 1.65.
  5. Add $4.50 for the Washington State Building Permit surcharge. If your project is for multi-family dwellings, add an additional $2.00 for each dwelling unit after the first one.
  6. Total the fees from items #3, 4 and 5 to determine your building permit fee.
