Q. Does the city have to come clean up the blackberry bushes that are growing into my yard from the nearby open space?
A. It is the property owner's responsibility to remove any vegetation overhanging or impinging on your property from the open space located directly behind your home. The municipal code (8.24 SMC) only creates two circumstances where weeds must be abated by the property owner: The first is when they "obstruct or impair the free and full use of the sidewalk or street by the public,"and second is when there are "grass, weeds, shrubs, bushes, trees or vegetation growing or which has grown and died and all debris upon any property which constitutes a fire hazard or a danger to public health." Unless either of those conditions is present, the City is not obligated to clear the blackberry bushes.

Q. How will I know if a field is closed due to bad weather?
A. The City will generally try to post whether baseball/softball fields are open or closed during the peak season by 3:00 p.m. each day on the website here. The rain out line is also maintained at (425) 888-8001. League organizers and coaches have the ultimate responsibility to notify parents and players, however.

Q. Are there restrictions on removing significant trees?
A. Significant trees in areas for open space, setbacks and landscaping are to be preserved. If one becomes hazardous, the Parks & Recreation Department should be notified so an assessment can be made and a replanting plan specified. The definition of a significant tree is in the clearing and grading regulations, SMC 15.20.020(U). The Municipal Code can be found online here. Landmark trees are also protected. Landmark trees are only on public property and none have been identified as of November 2010. For more information about the program, visit the website here.

Q. How often are the parks mowed?
A. Just like your lawn maintenance schedule varies according to conditions, so does the City’s park maintenance schedule. During the peak growing season, a park may be mowed twice a week. During the off season, they may not need to be mowed for quite a long period of time. The Parks & Recreation maintenance crew keeps a close eye on all parks and trails to assess maintenance needs.

Q. How are trails maintained?
A. Trails are monitored for issues with overgrowth, wash outs and need for new soft surface material or repaving. The trails must be maintained to their original width to allow for safe passage of multiple users, including bicyclists, walkers and joggers.
