Evergreen Fleet Initiative

King County and 21 cities and municipalities in Puget Sound came together at King County’s “Clean Vehicles NOW!” Conference in September 2007 to create the Evergreen Fleet Initiative and help fight climate change.

The Evergreen Fleet Initiative is an approach for decreasing carbon emissions from King County public vehicles, including the City of Snoqualmie’s. It will engage public fleets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting energy efficient strategies. It is similar to the LEED standard for green buildings, but with an emphasis on city fleets.

Green strategies in the Evergreen Fleet Initiative include idle reduction, training on fuel-efficient driving practices, incentive reward programs around fuel use to fleet users, “right-size” requirements, alternative fuels procurement, green fleet purchasing policies, and much more.

The City of Snoqualmie’s participation in the Evergreen Fleet Initiative will help decrease the community’s greenhouse gas emissions from city-owned vehicles. The city’s fleet will be scored by a 100 point system in the categories of reporting operations data, strategy implementation, and achieving greenhouse gas reductions.

Certifications will be awarded as Silver, Gold or Platinum, depending on the fleet’s actions to decrease carbon emissions.

• To achieve Silver, a fleet will have to implement nearly all of the green fleet strategies and report operations data on that fleet.
• To achieve Gold, a fleet must implement nearly all of the green fleet strategies, report operations data, and show greenhouse gas emission reductions from its operations data, but may not be up to the reductions level required by Washington State goals.
• To achieve the highest standard, Platinum, a fleet will have to implement nearly all of the green strategies, report operations data, and show greenhouse gas emission reductions at or above the level required to meet Washington State’s goals.

The Evergreen Fleet Initiative is sponsored by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and the Puget Sound Clean Cities Coalition
